Chapter 4

Chapter 4, titled Ringing Chimes , discusses that in order for presentations to be effective two things need to be accomplished.  First, the presenter needs to get the audience’s attention.  Secondly, the presenter faces the challenge of finding a way to make the presentation a memorable one.  Presenters should attract the audience’s attention but not distract their attention away from the presentation’s focus.  Getting their attention and keeping their attention can be helped by providing a “hook” based on activity 4.5.  CHIMESS should be taken into consideration when reflecting on a presentation experience that had a positive impact.  CHIMESS is an acronym for connections, humor, images, music, emotion, story, and senses.  Questions to keep in mind are: In what ways did you feel connected to the presenter?  How does laughter contribute to the overall enjoyment of the presentation?  What role do the visual aspects play in the drama?  What is communicated by boy language and facial expressions?  What message do the lyrics convey from the music played?  What emotions will your audience experience?  Can your audience relate to a personal story?  Is your presentation a multisensory experience?
